Ladies Winter Gala Day at Halesworth

Following on from our league matches over the winter, Tonia and a group of ladies played in the Gala Day hosted at Halesworth.

All had a great day, albeit a little cold. This was the final in a 2 year league. The Gorleston ladies finished in 3rd place after year 1. Congratulations go to Diss who won the winter League Shield.

Bring on 2024 when hopefully we can improve on our finish. Well done Tonia and all who contributed.

Captains Drive In

A beautiful sunny frosty morning greeted our new Captains for 2024.

Fortunately as players and members arrived for the Captain's Scramble an excellent idea from the new club Captain Mr Howard Kellett the frost started to lift under the gorgeous bright February Sunshine.

Due to travel arrangements the Ladies and Seniors Captain's , Leigh and Colin Denny hit their tee shots at 8.10, Colin only slightly out hitting Leigh and he did find the bunker.

The Scramble started at 8.30 with a full field of 97 players, which included Men's , Ladies and Juniors .

A lot of good nett scores in the mid 50's came in but 3 exceptional scores fought for the prizes ; 3rd - net 52 , Howard Kellett, Chloe Punter, Dave Cox & Nick Furzer 2nd - OCB - nett 52, Laura Westhorpe , Jack Noakes, Matt Brown, Bob Braine 1st net 50 Jack Moyse , Harvey Baldwin , Ainsley Eagle, Lewis Read

Further bottles were awarded to members who paid to estimate each Captains drive. They all hit good shots, Chloe Punter ( Junior Capt. ) being the best , 199 yards straight down the right half of the fairway. The four winners with near perfect estimates were , Stuart Pearce guessing Howard Kellett's drive 150yds, Wayman Arundel - Leigh Denny's 159; Anne Amos , Colin Dennys 192 , and Keith Ridsdale Chloe Punter 199.

Seniors Section

The seniors section is the largest group of members at Gorleston Golf Club.

We have great camaraderie and it couldn’t be better evidenced that at our “Christmas Bash” where this year 98 members enjoyed a festive meal (including 4 ladies who ran the half way hut and plied us with hot chocolate with brandy, sausage rolls & mince pies).
The “Christmas Bash” is the culmination of our senior events each year.

During the Spring to autumn period we have a full schedule of 32 reciprocal friendly matches against local clubs such as Cromer and Sheringham in the north, Thorpeness and Southwold to the south and Royal Norwich in the west to name a few.

Apart from these friendly home & away games, we also enjoy taking on our Ladies section in the Spring & Autumn in a long running competition called the “One Eyed Birdie”.

We have a few “seniors only” competitions, including competing in our own division at GGC’s championship weekend, where scores on the Saturday rank where you play on the Sunday, to produce the overall top senior.

New players are always welcome to join us (55 & over) and it’s a fantastic way for seniors joining Gorleston, to quickly integrate and make new friends.

Great Yarmouth & Caister retain the Howlett Smith Cup.

On Monday 9th October the ladies played the second match of the Howlett Smith against tough opponents Gt Yarmouth & Caister.

This competition was first played in 1960 and Mrs. Smith from Gorleston Golf Club went on to become Suffolk County Captain.

It was an honour to play in this annual competition as Ladies Captain for 2023 which now has 63 years of history between both clubs and long may it continue!

Gorleston ladies battled there socks off to try and close the gap, unfortunately our stella efforts couldn’t match Gt Yarmouth & Caister ladies.

Congratulations Gt Yarmouth & Caister, Gorleston ladies will certainly be back next year!

GORLESTON LADIES WESTON TEAM GAIN PROMOTION

Huge congratulations go to our Weston Team on gaining promotion to Division 2 in their first attempt for some 8 years.

The Weston is the Suffolk Ladies County Golf Association Scratch League where teams of 5 play six matches during the summer season in a singles matchplay format off scratch.

Gorleston won four of their 6 matches and 20 games as did Hintlesham but Fynn Valley, who won the Weston Bowl, won 5 of their matches and 20 games. Gorleston won promotion in second place as they won their match against Hintlesham 4-1. In this league the matches won take precedence over the games won.

The Ladies Section last entered this competition 8 years ago and our Ladies Captain, Jules Harbord and Committee were very keen to take our chance and enter the Weston League once again this year and are delighted at the outcome.

During the Season the following ladies were members of the Weston Squad who all played their part and must be congratulated on this very special achievement:

Tanya McGregor, County Captain, Jules Harbord, Ladies Captain, Kim Potter, Chloe Punter, Gail Chapman, Leigh Denny, Pauline Phillips, Linda Atkins, Marie Norman, Amanda Hood and Victoria Watson.

Well done Ladies, we at Gorleston Golf Club are very proud of you!

Gorleston Welcomes Anne Willard

Gorleston Golf Cub was delighted to see Anne Willard return to the club for a visit this last weekend. Anne is possibly the best golfer to have come out of Gorleston. A few of her achievement are , 1965 British Girls Champion, 1967 English Girls Champion, Suffolk Ladies champion 1967-69-70 & 71. !970 Sunningdale Foursomes, 1973 British Stroke play , 1976 member of the Curtis Cup Team , 1994-1997 England selector and she also played with the great Sevy Ballesteros.

Anne, daughter of George Willard the clubs Professional 1961- 1978 came back primarily to visit family as she now lives in Staffordshire. She met up with some old friends at the club and was delighted to have a tour of the Course where she had so many fond memories.

Jules Harbord ( Ladies Captain ) also managed to meet up with her and delighted in hearing golfing stories from Anne . Jules has recently made her debut for the Suffolk Ladies County 2nd side.

On of the stories Anne told was off her playing at Gorleston with the famous Comedian Jimmy Tarbuck and having Lisa his daughter caddy.
It was mentioned that the Junior event in memory of Anne's father was being played on Sunday. Her son very kindly came up and organised goody bags for all the Juniors playing , capping off a thoroughly enjoyable visit from one of Gorleston's greats.

First Hole in One for Mark O'Neil

On Monday 28th August, member Mark O’Neill achieved his first hole in one on the 7th.

With the sun low and in their eyes, Mark and his playing partner Adam Thurtle couldn’t tell if the ball had bounced off the flag stick, or indeed, straight into the hole.

However, a slightly thinned shot, was asked to ‘sit down’ and after a single bounce the ball appeared to have nestled firmly into the cup.

To top it off, Mark then carded his lowest ever round.

Luck of the half Irish!

Richard Hunt Memorial Day

On Friday 11th August the Richard Hunt Memorial day was held. This event is one the Juniors of Gorleston Golf Club look forward to the most, because they not only play first thing in the morning, they are also aware that the adults who step onto the course in the afternoon are playing for the Junior Sections’ future.

It’s a wonderful event that has been running since 2009 and contains all the elements of a fun day with a game of golf including, a hole in one prize of £5000, and it can happen! A fabulous raffle with a 50’’ Samsung Smart TV which was supplied by The Finance Shop. There were too many wonderful raffle prizes to mention but, a huge thanks to all that donated for the biggest raffle table ever! The event is completed with food on hand all day and a disco.

But let’s get to why. Richard Hunt was a great supporter of Gorleston Golf Club and particularly the Juniors. Richard’s wife Julie and their children Tommy and Annie work hard to make this a special day each year, and each year it gets better! The Juniors at our club are doing so well with their coaching by Duncan and Oli, our professional team. They are leading lights in our Super Six and Golf Nines
Competitions, finals of which are on the brink, and we are in with a chance! We have several young players taking their game a bit further, having been selected to undertake County Coaching too. Inter club matches and Junior friendlies are taking shape, giving the section a terrific opportunity to participate at other clubs and expand their abilities in the wonderful game of golf.

A huge thanks to the main sponsors of the day Darby & Liffen, Pink Office, Blue Limit Survey and the Everard Family.

The day began with an amazing 24 juniors taking to the course in the 18 and 9 hole competitions. The 18 hole event was won by Gilly Woolnough with Harrison Young winning the 9 hole event.

Seventy adults followed them in the afternoon, determined to enjoy their day, with refreshments on hand and beautiful weather. Well done to Richard Old who won and gave a fabulous acceptance speech.

Tees were sponsored and Vaughn Cutter was on hand to apply fines for whatever reason he felt applicable.

A wonderful day was had by all, culminating in a few speeches and prize giving.

It was lovely to hear of Julies pride as she talked about Annie, Tommy and Richard and his love for Junior Golf and how pleased he would be with the day.

Duncan, the club pro, talked about the section’s fantastic achievements accompanied by the Juniors all standing beside him.

Penny Platten spoke of Mark Everard and his love and support throughout the years, and how much he is missed at the club.

An amazing amount of £7032 was raised on the day.

Julie, Annie and Tommy work hard throughout the year to achieve the smooth running of this wonderful annual event and have a terrific group of family and friends to assist them.

On behalf of the Junior section at Gorleston Golf Club, thank you everyone who participated, donated, sponsored and took the time to care!

Remember to book Friday 9 August 2024 for another brilliant day at Gorleston Golf Club.

Ralph Moffitt Junior Open

On Monday 14th August Gorleston held their annual Junior Open named after Ralph Moffitt who was our Professional here from 1978 -1992 and once represented GB & Ireland in the Ryder Cup.

Bright and breezy conditions met the 21 juniors who took part. The field was divided between Handicaps 24 and below and 25 and above, with all playing Stableford, but the ones 24 and below also scoring medal for the major awards.

In the 25 and above division the winner was Harry Page with 39 points, 28 amazingly coming on the back nine.

The winner of the 24 and below was Max Elliott with 37 points.

Unfortunately one of the girl competitors had to drop out on the morning due to illness leaving the battle for the West cup between Chloe Punter and Ruby Reeve, both friends who represent Suffolk and Norfolk respectively.

Chloe came out the victor by one shot winning the trophy for the second year running.

Liam Buggs of Aldeburgh was the clear winner of the Ralph Moffitt Trophy and I'm sure someone Ralph would have been very impressed by, off a handicap of 1.6 he scored an excellent gross score of 76. Jamie Lee of Rookery Park was second with a gross 82 having never played the course before.

All the juniors enjoyed their day at Gorleston and we hope to see many return next year.

Sir John Drughorn

On Sunday 13th August Gorleston hosted the 85th playing of the Sir John Drughorn Trophy, The club was delighted to welcome an oversubscribed field of 73 players for their annual Men's Open and part of the Suffolk Golf Union Order of merit. It was great to see many regulars from both Gorleston and local clubs like Caister and Rookery make up the field as well as players from outside the region and even a couple from Holland.

The course presented a great challenge in the customary breeze and slightly less customary sunny conditions. The rough is a challenge, but overall the comments highlighted how excellent the course is playing.

Morning results saw Harvey Baldwin (Gorleston) and regular visitor Jonathan Crickmore (Kirby Valley) leading with a nett 69, with many lying only a few a shots behind. The scratch event was also tight with Tom Carding (Caister) and Peter Ogden (Gorleston) shooting a gross 75.

Things remained very tight in the afternoon, Tom Carding (Caister) came out top in the Scratch event on 149 gross pipping Peter Ogden by 2 with fellow Caister member Thomas Rutherford coming 3rd on 156. The Handicap overall totals were very close - 4th Peter Ogden 143, 3rd Jonathan Crickmore 142, 2nd Harvey Baldwin 141 and the winner Mackenzie Lodge 140.

This is a fantastic first big win for Mackenzie who has been tracking for a while. He is part of a group of excellent new members in their twenties and earlier 30s who have taken the game up recently. Golf also runs in the family as Mackenzie's grandmother is Jackie Walsh, our Lady President.

Many stayed for the presentation and commented on how excellent the course was and they look forward to returning next year.

Longest Day Challenge

"On Friday 23rd June, 4 members of Probe Oil Tools and 4 members of Claxton engineering services took part in the Longest Day in Golf challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. 72 holes over 4 courses.

Steven, Andy, Lewis and Max started their challenge at Great Yarmouth and Caister at 4am in the fog. The lengthy Caldecott Hall was next, followed by the beautifully presented Rookery Park. Finally coming to a close at the most easterly golf club in the UK, Gorleston Golf Club. Teeing off the back tees at all courses.

The boys decided to carry their clubs for all 4 rounds. Also played off the longest tees. Never once regretting it as they knew it was all for a brilliant cause. For the final 3 rounds they were supported by their friend, Kasey who carried extra food and drinks for them. He also made a couple of trips back to the car to grab some balls for Max.

They also decided to have a fine system in place with all proceeds going to the charity. Being furthest way on each par 3 and also not making the red tees from their tee shot. Andy won that competition with a total £40 fine. Some other memorable moments were, Max hitting Steven with a chip shot at Rookery. Andys ball landing on the roof of the buggy at Gorleston from 150 yards away and Lewis with his extremely tight shorts. However, arguably the biggest laugh of the day came at the start when Lewis misread the directions to pick Andy, forcing Andy having to drive himself to avoid being late.

Steven lead the birdie count with 5 on the day and also the best stableford score of the day with 37 at Rookery.

57,000+ steps and nearly 30 miles were walked. Amazing.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the courses for being so accommodating. Wavering our green fees and buggy fees for our support vehicle. Without them being onboard, our challenge wouldn't of been possible. Another big thank you to Matt and Nic who work at Probe and came round to support, motivate and bring food to the guys at various points. Kasey also deserves a big thank you for taking pictures and carrying our refreshments.

Finally we would like to say a massive thank you everyone that has donated to this brilliant cause. Its amazing what an event like this can do. We will all be affected by cancer at some points in our lives, directly or indirectly. Macmillan offer fantastic support.

A brilliant total of £9,290 has already been raised and we are all very grateful. If you would like to add to our total the link is below."

County Championship Handicap Winner

Congratulations to Ben Leuty who put up a great effort in this weekend Suffolk Amateur Championship. Ben has been playing some excellent golf this year and entering a number of excellent Amateur events. Ben was our only representative in the County Championship, which had over 80 players enter.

His first round of 72 had him in the top 3 and easily making the cut. The top 30 and ties played 36 on the Sunday and with a second round of level par
71 , Ben was within reach of a major victory.

Unfortunately it wasn't to be and he fell away with a final round of 77.

This was only 4 off second place though Ben ultimately finishing 7th . The winner was George Fricker a plus 4 handicapper from Woodbridge who is on a golf scholarship in the States. ( see full result on the SGU website )

Ben did However win the handicap prize and should be congratulated for an excellent tournament and proudly carrying the flag for Gorleston

Ladies "Jaycees Sugarbetes" - 72 Hole Challenge

At four o’clock in the morning of Monday 19 June 2023 the ‘Jaycees Sugarbetes’ arrived at Gorleston Golf Club to carry out their challenge of 72 holes of golf.

The plan was to take a few photographs before the first three ladies, Jules Harbord, Ladies’ Captain, Kinza Ellis and Marieta Holmes, who thought of the idea, teed off at 4.30 a.m. They would then be followed by Tonia Connor, Ladies’ Vice Captain, Amanda Hood and Marie Norman at 4.38 a.m.

It all went to plan beautifully with the help and support of Stu, Club Captain, Simon Hood, chief cook and Gary Connor responsible for batteries and trollies and Maggie Hart, the event organiser who had loaded up a buggy with snacks, drinks and medications.

The girls were playing stableford format for four rounds of 18 holes. They all teed off and the challenge began! Their games were amazing considering the deluge of rain during the night, leaving watery bunkers and pools of water on a few of the fairways. After teeing off the ninth all were fed bacon or sausage baps by Simon for their breakfast, which they ate as they carried on. The first 18 was completed earlier than expected with a clear course for the ladies to play with no delays.

The second game commenced at 8 a.m. with Jules, Marie and Amanda followed by Tonia, Kinza and Marieta. The ladies were soon back at the first tee with an impressive round and some good scores. They paused at the ninth for a cake or two from Simon, which they ate as they played on.

As they came in at the halfway stage Gary was busy swapping batteries and trollies, not a moment was wasted so, the third round was also brought forward and proved to be the most difficult. The course had become busy and the ladies were tiring a bit in the heat, but, they had burgers to look forward to on the ninth and copious amounts of water, juice, savouries and sweets from Maggie and Stu in the buggy.

All our members on the course were aware of the event and extremely supportive, allowing the two groups to play through. It was also a joy to see that neighbours had hung out a banner of support.

It was good to see Maxine, the James Paget University Hospital Charity Manager, who joined Maggie in the buggy during the event. A strong supporter of the ‘Jaycee Sugarbetes’ who has been with us from the start.

The final round which commenced at 3.40 p.m. was witnessed by the Lady Captains’ family who were delighted to be involved in the day, knowing that the contributions were going to the James Paget Hospital for paediatric diabetes. Jules had chosen this charity for her Captaincy year because her nephew Jake, had spent some time in the paediatric department and she wanted to show her gratitude for the wonderful work carried out by the staff involved.

Also husbands and partners caddied for the last round while Jules’s Mum became an assistant in the buggy, picking up the game of golf as we flew around!

It was a truly remarkable day and all of the Ladies played every hole to a brilliant standard. Well done to Jules and her friends for raising approximately £3400, the final figure will be released when known. Thanks to the office at Gorleston Golf Club, the professional team of Duncan and Oli, our wonderful club members, our friends who arrived to cheer on the final hole, to everyone who sponsored and that includes the boys ‘offshore on the Seafox 4 ’.

Special praise goes to all involved on the day, you may not have played golf but you certainly helped the ones that did.

There are no words to thank these six lovely friends that play golf and wanted to help Jules with her charity.

Simply ‘The Best’ Whoop, Whoop!

Norwich City Old Boys

A team of 12 played the annual friendly golf match with former players and associates of Norwich City Football Club on Monday 5th June.

This match has been played annually since the late 1900’s and started through a friendship with John Greatrex, a former Norwich City goalkeeper (and also a Norfolk County Cricketer) who lived next door to our club.

Key players for the Norwich City group were initially Terry Allcock, Sandy Kennon and Bill Punton. Sandy was their organiser for many years and Bill currently does the liaison and organising.

This year’s Norwich team included David Stringer, Bill Punton and Doug Evans and over the years Bryan Gunn, Brian Hamilton, Darren Eadie, Jeremy Goss, Peter Sylvester and Clive Payne have played amongst others.

It is tradition that the Club Captain of Gorleston Golf Club plays in our team and welcomes our visitors and this year was no exception with Stuart Pearce joining the team. The support for this fixture from Captain’s, Presidents and past Captains is encouraging and greatly appreciated.
The atmosphere in the clubhouse at this years event was heart-warming.

Members who wish to play in future fixtures are welcome to notify the office of their interest as we frequently have vacancies.

It was pleasing that Bill Punton was very complimentary about our course.

Ladies Past & Present Captains Lunch

On Friday 2nd June, 14 Lady Captains past and present played in a stableford cup match. Thankfully it stayed dry albeit windy once again. The course played wonderfully, thank you to all the greenkeeping staff for their continued efforts.

We had 19 ladies sit down to a wonderful lunch which was extremely appreciated by all. It was fabulous to see so many ladies reminiscing and how wonderful to have 51 years of history sat round the table. It was great to see Vivienne Sears who captained in 1972 sat beside our Lady Captain Jules in 2023. That is very special.

There was great golf played and the results were –

1st Leigh Denny with 39 points and winner of the Maggie Higgins Captains Trophy which was introduced in 1972.
2nd Andree Bloomfield with 37 points.
3rd Maggie Hart with 34 points.

A wonderful day was had by all and we all look forward to getting together again next year.

A Win for the Ladies Stearn Team

On Monday 5th June Gorleston Ladies played the first round of the Suffolk County Stearn match.

Team captain Maureen Dark along with Ladies Captain Jules, Leigh & Vera, Pauline & Gail, Victoria & Linda headed over to Southwold Golf Club our opponents were Felixstowe.

Played in very cold testing conditions the morning match went 2.5 points up in our favour which boosted our team’s spirit, we were up for the challenge, but Felixstowe pulled the afternoon matches back to all square and this then meant a play off!

After a long team discussion, it was decided by Maureen the team captain, Maureen and Jules were going to take on the play off holes and there was all to play for in a very tense atmosphere, and I am delighted to say after a chip and a putt Gorleston ladies have progressed through to the second round our opponents will be Bramford at a neutral venue yet to be arranged.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carol their team captain and Felixstowe ladies for the great matches we all had which was played in right spirit.

A massive thank you goes out to Tonia for caddying for me and Heather, Jan, Vonnie and Bob who came over to support all the ladies and to all of your well wishes before and on the day, it is so very much appreciated by us all and we all feel very proud of our achievement.

4 Point Golf Challenge

At 58 Degrees north (further north than parts of Alaska) Thurso Golf Club is the most northerly golf course on mainland UK and lies on the now very popular NC500 Route, but which golf courses are furthest east, west, and south? Member and Marketing Manager of Gorleston Golf Club, (the UK’s most easterly golf course, close to Norwich in Norfolk) Steve Titterington decided to investigate, and the 4 Point Compass Challenge was born.

After considerable investigations (googling) it became apparent that Mullion Golf Club which lies 30 miles from Lands’ End near Lizard Point is the most Southerly golf course on mainland UK, on the same latitude as the Czechia capital Prague. Traigh golf course was then identified as the most westerly golf course sitting just 7 miles south of Mallaig on the beautiful west coast of Scotland (Traigh, pronounced ‘try’ is Gaelic for beach) and a series of sandy beaches run alongside the course with stunning views to the Hebridean Islands of Muck, Eigg and Rum. Traigh golf club is actually further west than Lands’ End!

It is hoped the Four Point Compass Challenge may be popular with golfers and become the UK's golf equivalent of the Three Peaks Challenge with participants completing all four receiving a certificate and recognition.

On Sunday 21st May 3 golfers from Gorleston Golf Club in Norfolk set off on a mammoth 2000-mile adventure, (according to Google Maps in light traffic! 37hr if you drove non-stop around all these courses). Their aim? To raise the profile of the 4 Point Compass Challenge and raise money for 2 charities, the RNLI, and a Charity local to their club.

The team will be visiting the closest RNLI station to each of the golf courses they visit.

Stuart Pearce (Club Captain Gorleston Golf Club), and fellow members Marie Norman and Ray Pope will finally arrive in Thurso on Wednesday 24th May and have a well-earned rest in the Ferry Inn Scrabster before meeting the Scrabster RNLI team on Thursday morning and then completing their challenge by playing a round of golf at Thurso Golf Club Midday Thursday 25th May. The following day they will set off on the near 700-mile trip back to their home club in Norfolk, hopefully having raised lots of money for charity, made new friends, enjoyed their golf, and created a new UK golfing challenge.

Through to National Finals

We are pleased to announce a fantastic win for two of our members Ben Leuty and Lee Brooks who entered the Golf in Scotland TPC 2s event which was played last weekend.

These events cost a bit to enter but you get to play on top notch golf courses, in this case Kingsbarns and Scotscraig .

Ben is know for his consistent methodical golf , Lee for his natural talent but less consistency! However Ben informs me Lee in particular had a great weekend on the links courses and they came out eventual overall winners with 137 points over the 36 hole event.

They won £250 each and an invite to the National Finals again at two top courses in Scotland , If they triumph there I believe the grand Final is at TPC Sawgrass USA – well done and good luck lads

Captains Drive In

A bright sunny day with a typical fresh north easterly wind welcomed the 2023 Captain’s for their Drive in. A healthy crowd came out to support all four Captains.

Jacob Goldsmith, Junior Captain, was first on the tee , Jacob is known for his excellent swing speed which he put to good affect hitting just short of the green with a distance of 236 yards.

Not so well know for his swing speed !, Martin Bullen, Senior Captain, was next to the tee and he hit his ball 183 yards.

The Lady Captain Jules Harbord had been warming up since 10 O’clock and also got the ball away well, recording a distance of 166 yards.

Then came the new Club Captain , Stuart Pearce , who came out to the sound of ACDC ‘Back in Black’, and looking like a cross between Brian Johnson and Carl Froch .. It has to be said the ball went a long way – right and only through the help of the Junior volunteers were we able to find it at a distance of 186 yards .

We wish all the Captain’s well in their year and it was great to get off to an enjoyable start and raise nearly £200 for the Captain’s Charities, RNLI, Kingfisher Boxing and the Paediatric Diabetes Department at the JPH

Maddock Tankards raises £500 for Charity

This popular event usually played in December was postponed because of adverse weather conditions and was played on Sunday 15th January.

A full field turned out to play and support the Charity now traditionally attached to this event. In breezy conditions the Greensomes format proved challenging. At the halfway hut a warm punch made John’s late mother’s recipe was available to warm the golfers.

Congratulations to Richard Henwood and Christian Weihser who won with 39 pts, with Mackenzie Lodge and Billy Ellis second with 38.

John Maddock would like to thank all the members who supported his late father’s event and helped raise over £500 for the Sandra Chapman Ward. He would also like to thank Maggie Hart who ran the raffle and Stuart Pearce and Martin Bullen who helped run the event.

Ladies Captain’ charity presentation at Crohns & Colitis HQ

On Monday the 5th December Ladies Captain Leigh Denny and the Ladies President Jackie Walsh travelled down to Hatfield to the Crohns and Colitis Head Office. They had a wonderful visit meeting the fabulous people who provide day to day advice and support to all who suffer from this incurable debilitating disease.

Leigh was immensely proud to hand over a cheque for £5646.40 which was raised during her captaincy year so far. Leigh's Charity Open, raffles and generous donations all contributed to this tremendous amount being raised.

Leigh would like to express her sincere thanks to all the Ladies Section and members who helped make this amazing amount possible by contributing to the fundraising in some way. It is a fabulous achievement of which Leigh is extremely proud.

Thank you all so very much

Remembrance Sunday

A beautiful autumn morning welcomed a full field for this years Armistice Trophy. The mixed field of golfers were joined by Sergeant Vincent Markwell from the Royal Lancers.

Stuart Pearce Vice Captain and Maggie Hart greeted the players for the shotgun start. Stuart has been a major factor in the success of this event, providing the prizes and the link with the British Legion. Thanks also to Graham Tovey who supplied the Commemorative Golf Balls.

With the entry from the players , raffle, individual sponsors , and the auctioning of the regiments special whiskey , kindly brought in by Sergeant Markwell the event brought in nearly £1000 for the British Legion Charity. Thank you to all those who supported and helped on the day.

Junior Family Fun Day

A family Texas scramble was held at Gorleston Golf Club on Sunday 30th October, with a slight difference. The Junior section and guests played in teams of four which consisted of two juniors and two adults. The adult positions were filled by Mums, Dads, Uncles and Grandparents, some of whom had never held a golf club before, let alone have the responsibility of hitting a drive on one of the nine holes.

Forty four family members took part and enjoyed every minute, reaching the Clubhouse just before complete darkness.

The winners were father and son Colin and Charlie Whiteman, with father and daughter, Steven and Isabelle Everard.

In second place were father and son Howard and Sam Hunter, with mother and son Louise and Charlie Bernasconi.

In third place was father and son Goldie and Jacob Goldsmith, with brothers Arthur and Archie Darby.

Much leg pulling and banter, with discussions of brilliant shots and putts filled the club house to make it a memorable and fun occasion. All looking forward to another game in the Spring! It will be interesting to see who takes a couple of lessons before the next event….watch this space. Well done all who took part and a huge thanks to everyone that helped to make it possible.

Suffolk Order of Merit for Dane Whitely

Suffolk golf Union, which we are affiliated with, run an annual order of Merit event called the ‘Race to Aldeburgh ‘. To qualify for the final players need to have gained enough points in events like, the Fishing Smack (Rookery Park), the Silver Barrel ( Purdis Heath) or our own Sir John Drughorn Trophy. In the past Gorleston players have done well in the scratch event , however this year saw two of our members do well in the Handicap event.

Having gained qualification for their excellent play in the Drughorn Dane Whiteley who won and Max Evans who came second on count back both qualified.

Both Dane and Max had never played the challenging course at Aldeburgh before and to add to its difficulty had to play in torrential rain. However, they both did well Max coming 3 equal and Dane winning the event with a nett score of 74, no mean achievement round there.

Dane picked up a further 200 points to add to his 95 points from the Drughorn which meant he was the overall Handicap Winner of the Race to Aldeburgh 2022, a great achievement well done Dane.

Club President Penny Platten won the “best turned out” and deservedly so. Another fun day was had by all.

The wind was blowing strong which made it harder to see a purple golf ball….thank you to all who persevered and made it back with the purple ball. A stop at the halfway hut provided welcome drinks and snacks.

Thank you to all who sponsored tee’s, donated prizes, bought raffle tickets and bought mulligans.

25 Years Loyal Service

Derek Ransome joined Gorleston Golf Club 25 years ago on the 4th August 1997.

From a very early age Derek always had an interest in gardening which resulted in him attending college to study horticultural. From college he obtained employment within the Horticultural industry in commercial glasshouses before joining Gorleston Golf club as part of the greenkeeping team under Head Greenkeeper Ashley Clarke and Secretary/Manager Peter Longbottom.

Over the last 25 year period Derek has worked under two Head Green Keepers and our current Course Manager, Danny Perring. During this time he has seen many changes and improvements to the course.

“Derek commented that he thoroughly enjoyed working with the team, most of whom have been with the club a while, and seeing the improvements in machinery, rough and course management which have all helped to improve the course.”

As a thank you for Derek’s 25 years of service to Gorleston Golf Club the Club Captain Keith Wright presented Derek with a Certificate and a £100 gift voucher. Pictured with the Club Captain and Course Manager.

The club would like to thank Derek for his continued work on the course and the skills and dedication he brings.

Dinahmac Trophy

Bank Holiday Monday the 26th of August saw the annual Dinahmac Trophy , run by Patrick Greaney in memory of his mother and grandfather .

Patrick decided for a change to the traditional format of scramble to a Florida Scramble which requires a bit more strategy. As usual the event filled very quickly and a field of 15 teams went out and it was very pleasing to see some of our Juniors in the field.

Nearest the Pin Prizes went to Vera Woolnough on the 4th and Colin Denny on the 7th .

The Competition for the Trophy was very tight with 9 of the teams between Nett scores of 55 and 57, the eventual winners and regular experts at this format were the Team of David Butcher, Ray Pope, Ian Harbord, and Martin Barker , pipping the team of Vera and Terence Woolnough and Colin and Leigh Denny on count back .

President's Challenge

On Saturday 27 August the Club President’s Team played the Annual Presidents Challenge against the Ladies President’s Team. The weather was sunny and warm and the 44 entrants enjoyed the super condition our course is in!

Penny and Jackie had agreed a Guildford Greensomes format and their teams were drawn from the start sheet.

An anonymous member had presented super golfer figurine trophies and boxes of cut glasses! These figurines had been set on wooden bases by Stuart Low and they certainly looked the part. This was a special competition to mark the Ladies Section Centenary Year and the Trophies will be played for annually as part of this Challenge!

The Club Captain partnered the Club President and they were the leaders in the Clubhouse with 44 points. However, the last group to come included the winning partnership of Marie Norman and Amanda Hood with a super 45 points.

The Competition was free to enter and there were plenty of prizes including crystal glasses, Prosecco, wine and golf balls for the first four places plus nearest the pins and the line!

Basket meals were also available. The final prize to be presented was ‘The Oggin’ which was won this year by Jackie Walsh and her 22 strong team.

The Presidents pass on their thanks and congratulations to all who took part and those who worked so hard to make the event the success it was.

Lady Captains Day

On Wednesday 17th August 39 ladies played in the scramble and 49 stayed for lunch. This was the most the ladies have had for a very long time. Thank you to all who came and enjoyed my very special day.

The day started a little drizzly but this didn’t dampen the spirits, before too long the sun came out and it was a fine day once again. The course was in great condition despite the lack of rain which we are still dancing for. Thank you to Danny and team again for preparing for us.

Colin & Ian took guard at the halfway house and ensured all players were refreshed with food and some energizing drinks. Who knew gin and golf went very well together, hic… which was most appreciated by all. Lots of fun was had at the hut. Thank you both. Heartfelt thanks to Jules my Vice for all her support on the day, especially her capturing all the memories made. She’s a very discreet photographer…

When they finished everyone put on their glad rags and waited in anticipation for the raffle draw, which was very kindly run by Maggie. As usual this was very successful and raised almost £500 for my Charity, Crohns and Colitis UK. Thank you to all who supported, donated and special thanks to Maggie for the beautiful hamper which she donated.

Thank you to Julie behind the bar who ensured everyone had a drink. Special thanks also to Captain Keith, Club President Penny and Ladies President Jackie for their continued support.

We had some great scores on the day, the winners were –

1st Jenny Watson, Jean Eagling and Jayne Needham with a net 59
2nd Maureen Dark, Rosemary Hodgkin and Jane Biss with a net 60
3rd Vera Woolnough, Linda Atkins & Janette Hetherton with a net 61

The nearest the line prize went to Sheila Sterry
The nearest the pin prize went to Rosemary Hodgkin

This was followed by a most superb lunch. Thank you to Simon and team for such a treat.

Ralph Moffitt Junior Open

On Monday 15th August we were delighted to run this Junior event which holds Ralph’s name. With a late rush of visitors and our ever developing Junior section 24 juniors entered.

The winner of the Ralph Moffit Trophy is for the best gross score and this was Jake Gunby from Dereham who shot an excellent 77 gross. The girls also play for the West Cup , kindly donated by Pat West . This was a tight tussle between Chloe Punter ( Gorleston ) and Lilia Copeman ( Bawburgh ) , both scored 37 stableford points and Chloe won the Cup on count back .

Many of our younger Juniors were playing their first 18 hole major event and as usual were superbly supported by parents and the Junior Committee. The Stableford part of the event was another close affair with both Max Elliott and Harry Page scoring fantastic 45 points , Max winning on countback.

Sir John Drughorn

On Sunday the 14th of August we held our prestigious Sir John Drughorn Trophy . After the success of the Club Championship it took on a slightly new form as our Men’s 36 hole Open event , but still holds its prestige as one of our top Trophies to win .

A near full field of 61 players took part on a very hot day. Max Evans took an early lead with nett 63 in the morning , with Dane Whiteley close behind with a nett 66. These two would ultimately fight it out with Dane winning on count back scoring a nett 67 to Max’s 70..

Jack Butcher held the morning lead with a gross 72 and held on against two visitors, Patrick Spraggs plus 4 handicap Aldeburgh and Tom Carding scratch Caister , to win by one shot with a gross total of 146.

It was really good to have so many stay for the presentation and thanks goes to the members and visitors who battled it out over 36 holes.

Captain's Day

On Sunday 31st July Club Captain Keith Wright held his Golf Day to raise funds for the Gorleston RNLI Lifeboats.

For the first time in weeks it rained overnight and looked like it might be set in for the day but by 7.30 the rain has relented and it was time to get the first competition under way.

The first event of the day was the Captains Cleek, a relatively new competition with the trophy having been presented by Angus Smith in 2014. It’s a Stableford competition with a shot gun start which for the first time in honour of the Ladies Centenary year was a mixed competition. It was a full field of 88 players and everyone was off by 08.30.

The Course Manager Danny Perring and the green staff have been busy all year keeping the course in excellent shape and today was no different with the greens playing true and even though the fairways look ‘burnt’ they provide a good test of golf.

With the competition over players returned to the clubhouse for drinks and a BBQ while the scores were checked. Surprisingly the scores were not as high as expected considering the mild conditions but none the less they were very good.

The winner of the Captain’s Cleek was Dave Wooden with a score of 41 beating Tony Wren on count back with Bill Ball third, Martin Farrow fourth and Jeff Helmore fifth.

Before the presentation the Rev Albert Cadmore representing the RNLI gave an interesting and well received talk on the duties and recent activities of the RNLI along the Norfolk coast and in particular the Gorleston Lifeboat Samarbeta based at the Lifeboat station, Riverside Road, Gorleston.

After a lively presentation it was back out on the course for the afternoons competition, a 9 hole 3 club and a putter open challenge; not an easy format but a chance to test the skill of the players with a limited number of clubs. Unfortunately the rain returned with intermittent showers for the rest of the afternoon but my playing partners of Penny, (Club President), Leigh (Lady Captain) and Jackie (Lady President) kept their spirits up by watching my ‘different’ pre-shot routine. After nine holes it was back to the club house for well earned refreshments of a hot and cold buffet provided by the caterers (The Clubhouse at SW1) which was a much needed meal after the day’s exertions

The final event of the evening was the presentation of prizes to the winners of the afternoon match. In third place was Chloe Punter Second place was Glenn Turley and in first place was Arthur Darby with 21 points. Congratulations to all the prize winners especially Arthur and Chloe who are both juniors.

The afternoon putting competition run by the Captain's wife Val and daughter Jade was won by Brendan Gough with Tommy Hunt second and raised £72.00

The silent auction of the various four balls from around the county and the raffle raised almost £1800

A special thanks to everyone who helped to arrange and organise the day and to Cheryl Hacking and the team at the RNLI for all their support before and on the day.

Lady Captain's Charity Open

On Wednesday 20th July our club was buzzing.

We had 24 teams representing 17 different clubs. My team and I, our husbands and our Club Captain all wore white bottoms with purple shirts to represent the colours of my charity, Crohns and Colitis UK.

The weather couldn’t have been better, a little drizzle first thing but then the blue sky and sunshine arrived just in time for the first tee time. The course was truly magnificent once again. A huge thank you to Danny and team for ensuring it was all tip top.

Many thanks to so many for all for your help and support on the day,

Maggie and Jules did a fabulous job with the raffle and raised £466 on the day.

Vera, Sue and Jackie ran a fantastic halfway hut with home bakes which were appreciated by all. Maureen and Heather ran the day with superb organisation as always.
Colin & Ian both ensured everyone went off on time.

The day was finished with a hot and cold buffet which was enjoyed by all. The catering and bar staff ensured we were fed and watered.

A special thank you to our Club Captain Keith and Club President Penny for their support too.

The results were as follows –
1st Team from Richmond Park 112 points
2nd Team from Ufford Park 107 points
3rd Team from Sprowston, Wensum Valley and Bawburgh 106 points ocb
4th Team from Bawburgh 106 points ocb
A substantial amount was raised and it will have got my Captains charity fundraising well and truly started.

It was an awesome day once again with 96 ladies having gone home very happy. Gorleston Golf Club back to its very best.

Gorleston Golf Club Switch Golf for Cricket

On Sunday 10th July Ovamill held their Acle Cricket Club Main Sponsors day at Acle Recreation Centre

This year's tournament included four teams, put together Ovamill, Acle Cricket Club, Gorleston Golf Club and The Nest.

The first T10 saw Acle bat first against Ovamill and despite a bold effort from our team, we fell short and out of the tournament.

The second T10 saw Gorleston Golf Club vs The Nest. The Nest batted first and in spite of a valiant attempt from Gorleston, they were through to the final.

A competitive final took place between Acle and The Nest, giving huge entertainment and a narrow win for Acle, who became the first team to receive the Mark Everard trophy

A huge THANK YOU to all of the teams, everybody who came along to spectate and those that made donations - Mark would have been absolutely bowled over seeing us all come together, eating ice creams and rasing over £850 in the charity raffle, which will go straight to Centre 81.

President's Day

Sunday 10th July Club President Penny Platten held her golf day. It was a beautiful sunny day with the sun shining on an immaculate Gorleston Golf Club

The morning consisted of a traditional Men’s Stableford and after Penny had presented prizes for the first four places, best front and back nine and three nearest the pins. she was delighted to present the Presidents Putter to Jim Robinson who had a score of 40 pts, pipping Mat King on count back. In all 80 members were treated to a BBQ after their game.

In the afternoon some members went out again and others joined for a slightly more social but still keenly contested Texas Scramble.

It was great to see a mix of categories in the leading places. Narrowly coming second with a net score of 51 was the team of Lee Crosswell, Dan Markwell, Lee Collings and Lewis Hooley, beating them by one with a nett 50 was the Punter Family of Dave, Emma, Chloe and Lennon, the eagle they scored on the 9th with Dave driving the green and Emma holing the putt secured the win. (Dave is trying to say he did most of the work, but with Chloe being selected for County training many believe and know otherwise! 75 members and guests enjoyed Fish and chips after their game

Penny would like to thank all those who supported her day which was the final one of her three year Presidency and wish all members an enjoyable remainder of the season golf at Gorleston Golf Club.

Members Fundraising Supports the JPH

Ward 2 patients will benefit from two new comfortable recliner chairs following a fundraiser at Gorleston Golf Club last year.

More than £6,260 was raised through the charity golf day that was organised by Glen Harman. A friend and former member of the club had suggested to him that it would be good to do a fundraiser to say thank you to the hospital team for their work during the pandemic and Glen took up the challenge.

He rallied friends, family and businesses to support the event and managed to raise well over £6,000, which he handed over to the hospital in September last year.

Earlier today Glen visited the ward to see the chairs purchased with the funds – and heard more about how useful they are for patients from Ward 2 Deputy Sister Stacey McLaughlin, who is pictured with our charity co-ordinator Maxine Taylor and Glen.

The chairs provide additional comfort for patients with cardiac and other conditions and can be used to raise legs or to sleep in if patients prefer to be in a more upright position.

Maxine said; “We’d like to thank Glen, everyone at Gorleston Golf Club and everyone who supported the day for raising this huge amount for our charity. The chairs mean patients can be more comfortable as they recover and they will make a real difference to so many people.”

East Meets West

David Mills, with his brother in law (Steve Clemo) completed their crazy charity challenge and played the most easterly golf course, Gorleston Golf Club on Saturday 2nd July, they then drove 461 miles to play the most westerly golf course in England, Cape Cornwall Golf Club in Cornwall.

The amazing day, started by them getting up at 3.30am to get to Gorleston to tee off at 4am and then watch the sunrise. They were joined by Stuart Pearce which was well appreciated. Three and a half hours later, after an interesting round met our captain and then left for Cornwall They started their 8.5 hour drive down to Cape Cornwall, right at the end of England as far as you can drive.

Arriving at Cape Cornwall (St Just). On arrival they found a stunning golf course set right on the cliff tops around Lands End with some of the most dramatic rocky views they have ever seen while playing golf. The photos don't actually show the drama to its full effect but they give a glimpse.

Steve and David commented on how two courses were both in fabulous condition and both were holding their Club championships this weekend so we're well prepared which made the golf great. They both played some pretty good golf (but also played some pretty bad shots too).

The only downside to the day was the sunset was hidden by clouds even though we had experienced beautiful blue sky's the whole round of golf.

The amount raised for charity is yet to be announced but both are thankful for the donations to date.

Both David and Steve thanked both clubs for their support !

Hambro Run Ends at Brett Vale

On Sunday 19th June the Hambro Team travelled to Brett Vale for their third round match.

Unfortunately the team missed out on a semi-final place losing 8 down to Brett Vale .

Giving away over 30 shots as a team, which is even more difficult away from home , Gorleston put in an excellent morning performance coming in 2 up overall. Kasey Bailey and skipper Brendan Gough leading the way being 5 up.

The afternoon proved tougher with home advantage creeping in .

The final score was 8 up to Brett Vale.

It is a shame not to go on , but Brendan has done a great job Captaining the side and would like to once again thank Ovamill and all the player for their support .

Tolly Team Progress to Semi Finals

A resounding 18 up win at home to Diss has progressed the Tolly team to the Semi-finals where they will face St. Clements or Stowmarket at a neutral venue yet to be decided. The team were excellently managed by my Stand in Eddie Reid and I managed to get back from Spain in time to see the groups finish their final holes of the day.

Firstly big thank you to Geraint Amos for being at the course early after the apparent storms you had Saturday night and having both team captains agreeing that all the bunkers should be deemed GUR due to the excess water.

Feedback from the Diss Captain and players point this rounds Man of the match Kieran Gallant who apparently was out of this world and will be in the Hambro team next year. Our max handicappers, Matt Leggett and Andy Ingham returned a 5 up on the day against the Diss captain who tried two partners to crack them with no luck, Kevin Carter and Kieran Gallant were 9 up overall and a big shout to Ray Pope and Bradlee McQueen who rattled in a 6 up win after giving their opponents 3 shots in the afternoon.

Once again our lovely President Penny Platten was there to see the boys off in the morning and following them home in the afternoon and once again picking up the Tab for both teams refreshments afterwards, such a lovely gesture and no doubt why the boys keep winning as they are too tight to buy their own. (smiley face)

I believe Mike Amos also followed the boys in the morning and wish him well with his upcoming operation and thanks to John Maddock who also gave the boys a look.

All in all we are very proud of our efforts and will endeavour to do our best for the club in this competition.

Team pairing of the day was Kevin Carter and Kieran Gallant (9up overall)

Stuart Pearce (proud captain of the Tolly)

Past Captains Annual Dinner

Friday 17th June saw the Club’s Past-Captains playing the annual match for the Salver and then attending a formal dinner in the Clubhouse. With sixteen Past-Captains present extending back to Mike Amos from 1990, (when petrol was 40p a litre) and honoury guest, the present Captain, it was a splendid occasion.

On a very warm evening the course has never looked in better condition and the Salver was won by Jack Flaxman (1999). Many thanks to SW1 staff for a superb meal and Julie on the bar who looked after everyone excellently.”

Senior Pair Triumph at Halesworth

Greg Carter and David Cook travelled to Halesworth on Tuesday 14th June to play in the Seniors Open.

They had 44 points total which included 24 on the back 9 which enabled them to win on countback ahead of two other pairs. A 7 foot putt on the last hole turned out to be very useful.

David Cook was partnering Greg as substitute for Andy Woodcock who sadly passed away in April. They thought beforehand that it would be nice to win it for Andy.

Well Done

The Queens Platinum Jubilee

A year ago, as Gorleston Golf Club is the most easterly course in the United Kingdom, we were contacted by Bruno Peek, Pageant Master. He asked if we as a Club would like to take part in the Celebrations by lighting a Beacon on the Course, of course, the Management Committee agreed and a special event was planned for the Members, their friends and guests to take part.

In the afternoon teams of four competed in an AM/AM. Prior to play each player was presented with a commemorative ball marker and there was no entry fee. Prizes were for the best three teams plus nearest the pin and nearest the line challenges. On the day the winning team was Gail Chapman, Robert Cooper, Jackie Walsh and Martin Bullen.

85 people enjoyed the barbecue which was followed by the Prize Presentation.

Entertainment on the night was provided by Jazz Trumpeter, Dennis Frere-Smith who finished his set by leading a 'Sing Along' which was really well received and made for a super atmosphere in the bunting clad Club House.

After the Presentation the Captain asked for everyone to be upstanding whilst Dennis played the National Anthem. It was very moving as we sung along followed by a toast of Dubonnet Cocktail 'the Queen's favourite tipple' to Her Majesty.

It was becoming dusk as a happy crowd made their way across the Golf Course to the Beacon ably lit and tended by John Hopwood. The Captain and President each said a few words followed by an especially composed fanfare named 'Majesty' played on the trumpet.

All in all it was wonderful that we at Gorleston Golf Club played our part in being one of the 1,500 Beacons lit in the UK and 3,500 across the world. It was an historic and auspicious occasion and we proudly played our part.

Huge thanks to the team who put this event together and to the Members and guests who made it a Day to Remember.

Ladies Centenary Spring Mixed Open

On Saturday 28th May 76 players from 18 different clubs played in the Ladies first Open of this year.

It was a brilliant day. Sadly, the weather was a little unkind with a keen wind but thankfully no rain.

All of the visitors commented on how wonderful the course was. Thank you Danny our Course Manager and his team for preparing to such a high standard. It was so nice to receive so many compliments.

It was all very tight waiting for the results to come in.

We had 5 teams on 42. However, the results were:

1st with 43 points Kerry and Steve Enever from Diss
2nd with 42 points Rita fossey and Paul Sherwood from Halesworth
3rd with 42 points Michael and Clare Woods from Halesworth
4th with 42 points Jacqueline & Simon Brown from Tenterden

A huge thank you to Club Captain Keith, Club President Penny, Maureen and Richard Duckett for all your arranging, to Maggie and Vonnie for the Raffle, to my Committee Ladies in the Halfway Hut & meet and greet, Jules, Colin and Ian as Starters, the bar and restaurant staff and the Greens staff for preparing the course.

A very fine example of Gorleston Golf Club at its very best.

Rare Away Win for Stenson Team

On Sunday 8th May the Stenson Team led by Brendan Gough travelled to Newton Green for the first round match.

Three of the groups won in the morning with Ben Leuty and Steve Crosby snatching the win on the 18th, Gorleston started the afternoon with a 3-1 lead but Steve Crosby received a bye in the afternoon due to one of the Newton Green players not being able to continue made it 4-1. Jack Butcher and Chris Duffy all won convincingly in the afternoon for Gorleston to take the win.

Gorleston won by 71/2 to 41/2.

Congratulations to all who took part and we are looking forward to the next round at home to Ipswich.

A special mention to the late Mark Everard of Ovamill who sponsored the team shirts and was sadly missed on the day and in our thoughts as he would have been very proud.

Golf club fundraising boost for local charity

Despite severe restrictions caused by Covid, charity fundraising during Fred Simeons’ year as captain of Gorleston Golf Club went with a swing - and has resulted in more than £800 being donated to Centre 81.

Mr Simeons, captain in 2020, said: “It was a pretty awful year for us all and the golf club was closed for months, but I’m pleased we were able raise this money for such a great cause.” The cash will go towards the £1.5 million redevelopment of the charity’s new premises in Morton Peto Road, Great Yarmouth.

Centre 81’s chief executive Diana Staines said: “Gorleston Golf Club are amazing supporters of Centre 81 and I can’t thank them enough for thinking about us and raising this money in such a difficult time.

“We are developing a state-of-the-art centre for disabled people that will also provide a home for other local charities. Every penny of the money raised by the club will be put to good use.”

Centre 81 operates a skills and activities centre, currently based at Tar Works Road, and has a membership of about 70 people with a range of disabilities. The organisation also has a fleet of nine fully accessible minibuses providing a community transport service for more than 400 people who can’t access traditional public transport.

LADIES RAISE FUNDS FOR UKRAINE

On Wednesday 20th April the Ladies section held a Ukraine Fundraising Day. It was decided by the Ladies Captain and Ladies President to dedicate their match to raise funds.

On entry the ladies made donations and were presented with their Ukraine gift bag. Everyone was encouraged to wear blue and yellow and great effort was made by all. The weather was perfect and as promised by our Course Manager Danny, the greens were outstanding.

When we finished, we had cakes and biscuits available for donations which went down nicely with a cup of tea. Rosemary Hodgkin won a prize for the best dressed.
We held a raffle, and some wonderful prizes were won. Thank you to all who made and donated hampers, made ribbons, donated yellow balls, baked cakes, donated prizes and gave generously.

Congratulations to the Ladies President whose team just pipped the Captains team.

The ladies captain was absolutely delighted to say they raised £526.20 on the day. In the coming weeks the funds will be donated to a Ukraine Charity.

FIRST WIN FOR CHLOE PUNTER

On Wednesday 13th April, for the first time the ladies section held open their competition to later in the day.

This is a new initiative that the new Ladies Captain spoke about in her acceptance speech at the AGM. This is to allow ladies who might work and juniors the opportunity to participate in the Wednesday competitions when feasible, outside of the competition slot. Hopefully this small change is an ideal way to encourage ladies and juniors to still take part despite their commitments.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Chloe Punter played later in the day with her Mum marking her card and she came in with an outstanding 45 points. Chloe therefore won the Clayton Cup. What an amazing example of inclusivity producing results…..

SUFFOLK JUNIOR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Louie Bayfield, Chloe Punter and Jacob Goldsmith played in their first County Competition on Saturday 16 April at Halesworth Golf Club.

The team played well and came in with a joint score of 94 points beaten by the home team who scored 108.

Well done Gorleston Juniors.

FIRST COUNTY MATCH OF THE SEASON

On Monday 4th April the ladies entered their first County match of the year. They played the first round of the Seniors Silver Shield at home against Thorpeness.

Thankfully it didn’t rain but was very cold and blustery. We are delighted to announce that after four tight matches, the Gorleston Ladies won by four holes.

Anne Amos captained this match and did an excellent job picking a winning team. Thank you Anne. They will now go through to the second round at either Flempton or Woodbridge.

The ladies all wore their new jumpers that were very kindly sponsored by Stuart Low of Blue Limit Surveys. Thank you again Stuart.

Chairman of the Ladies Centenery Committee and Women's Charter Champion, Maggie Hart, was delighted to announce the many events scheduled during the year for the whole club. She added that the club are hosting several County Competitions during the year including the SCLGA Centenary Trophy a Ladies Foursomes Competition.

The Golf Course itself continues with its programme of improvements under the direction of Course Manager Danny Perring. A new irrigation system has been installed and major work has been undertaken to improve numerous binkers.

We at Gorleston Golf Club love to welcome visitors whether new or those who are returning once more to see, play and enjoy the Course again. Improvements to the Club House itself have begun and Members are looking forward to enjoying this special year in the Club's history.
